How To Remove Rust From LG Appliances

When it comes to LG appliances, you likely picked yours out for style as much as functionality. But with regular use, even high-quality appliances can develop unsightly spots and rust. Rust stains don’t go with any kitchen décor, but if your appliances are developing rust problems, not to worry. There are plenty of ways to banish those ugly spots from your sinks, stoves, and fridges. While every appliance is different, these are a few sure-fire ways to keep rust away from your beloved LG kitchenware.

Preventing rust

In addition to being sleek and stylish, stainless steel is a favorite for kitchen appliances because it doesn’t rust easily. The good news is that if you see rust on your stainless-steel appliance, it’s probably just on the metal’s protective surface layer, which can be cleaned and even repaired with a little TLC. But before all that, the best way to keep rust off your devices is to prevent it from appearing in the first place. Try to figure out how the appliance got damaged—scratches are usually enemy number one for any stainless-steel surface. When the steel’s finish or plastic coating get scraped away, the metal underneath is left exposed and susceptible to rusting. Harsh cleaners and abrasive brushes are often to blame for this initial surface damage. To keep rust at bay, start by switching up your cleaning routine—keep scouring pads and metal wool far away from stainless steel, and use only gentle cleaning products. Keep an eye open for any leaks that might be exposing your appliance to excess water too.

Cleaning rust

When it comes to cleaning off rust, you have a few options. It all depends on what you have on hand, but the most popular methods involve baking soda. Baking soda can be combined with equal parts of either water or lemon juice to create the perfect rust-busting solution. Just apply the paste to your LG appliance, then use a damp cloth, sponge, or soft brush (like a toothbrush) to gently scrub the rust away. For tough spots, let the paste sit for 15-30 minutes before scrubbing it off. Another reliable way to get rid of rust is white vinegar. Just pour the vinegar onto a rag and go to work—your appliance should be rust-free in no time.

Restoring natural shine

Now that you’ve gotten all the rust off your appliances, you’ll want to bring back that showroom-sparkle that makes your LG so special. If your surfaces are stainless steel, the best way to restore its natural shine is plain old oil. Olive oil, baby oil, and mineral oil will all work wonders to get your appliance shiny and new. Just dip a thin rag or paper towel in the oil of your choice and rub it into the steel. Be sure to rub along the direction of the metal grain—polishing against the grain could cause scratches or oil buildup in the metal grooves. Then, if you want to minimize the oily feeling on the surface, use a soft buffing cloth to work the oil into the metal. If your appliance doesn’t have a stainless-steel face, LG also offers touch up paint to fix scratches and cover up spots caused by rust.
